Abstract:
Objective This work aims to analyze the clinical features and appropriate surgical treatment methods of pancreatic endocrine tumors.
Methods The clinical data of 16 pancreatic endocrine tumor patients were retrospectively analyzed. These patients were treated in the Fourth Affiliated Hospital of China Medical University between January 2000 and October 2011.
Results Nine insulinoma cases, 4 gastrinoma cases, 3 nonfunctional islet cell tumor cases, and one somatostatinoma case were observed. Of the 16 patients, 14 underwent radical resection. The other two had irresectable tumors and thus had to give up surgery. After surgery, two cases had pancreatic leakage and another two had intestinal obstruction. The hospital mortality rates of all cases were not determined. The mean follow-up period of the 16 patients was 4.5 ± 2.3 years. The two patients who only underwent surgical biopsy died within one year. Moreover, two malignant tumor patients with relapse or metastasis died within 3 years after surgery. All patients with benign tumors survived.
Conclusion Radical surgery is the best treatment method for pancreatic endocrine tumors. Choosing the proper surgical procedures can help avoid postoperative complications and improve prognosis.
