Abstract: A precise procedure, such as the cell cycle regulation mechanism exists for each cell.This mechanism decides the time of cell growth, splitting, or death.Cells can regularly grow, split, and die under the control of its related genes.Sabotage in cell cycle regulation mechanism results in an out of control cell growth, which is a fundamentally common characteristic in almost all types of tumors. Gene mutation of several oncogenes and anti-oncogenes changes cell cycle regulation, including abnormality of the start, running, and termination of cell cycle.The change initiates the cells to enter the cell cycle constantly, instead of ceasing proliferation by breaking away from the cell cycle, or voluntary apoptosis.Thus, unlimited, independent cell proliferation and division occur.Traditional Chinese herbal medicine has a long history in cancer treatment.Screening for anticancer Chinese herbal medicine has gained increasing attention in recent years because of abundant resources and fewer side effects.Active ingredients in several traditional Chinese medicines can block cell cycle at G, phase, S phase, or G₂/M phase to inhibit cancer cell proliferation and induce apoptosis, generating an anti-tumor effect.This article reviews the influence of traditional Chinese medicine on cell cycle.
