Abstract:
Objective To investigate the efficacy of pain relief and function restoration of Percutaneous Balloon kyphoplasty (PKP) for vertebral metastases.
Methods This is an open-labeled prospective study. A total of 28 patients with vertebral metastases were treated with PKP. Pain intensity, dose of analgesics, activity ability of vertebra before and after the operations were recorded and evaluated.
Results PKP was conducted in 45 vertebras successfuUy. At one week after operation, 13 patients (46.4%) had pain relief completely and 13 (46.4%) patients gained pain relief significantly. Analgesics dose, pain intensity, and activity ability of vertebra were significantly improved after the operation (P < 0.01).
Conclusion PKP is a safe and effective measure to treat metastatic spinal tumor. It can release vertebral metastasis-related pain and enhance strength and stability of the abnormal vertebra.
