Abstract:
Objective To investigate the expression and significance of poly adenosine diphosphate (ADP)-ribose polymerase (PARP1) and its active product poly ADP-ribose (PAR) in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) and non-TNBC.
Methods Immunohis-tochemical staining was used to detect different expression patterns of PARP1 and PAR in 107 TNBC and 116 non-TNBC cases.
Results: Immunohistochemical staining revealed different cytoplasmic and nuclear PARP1 and PAR expression patterns. Nuclear PARP1 (χ2=9.258; P=0.002) and cytoplasmic PARP1 (χ2= 3.879; P=0.049) expression was higher in the TNBC group than in the non-TNBC group. The nuclear PAR expression was lower in the TNBC group than in the non-TNBC group (χ2=6.163; P=0.013). By contrast, the PAR cytoplasmic expression was significantly higher in the TNBC group than in the non-TNBC group (χ2=7.454; P=0.006). No signifi-cant correlation existed between the PAR and PARP1 expression patterns either in the cytoplasm or in the nucleus.
Conclusion Nuclear or cytoplasmic PARP1 was highly expressed in TNBC. High cytoplasmic and low nuclear PAR expression patterns were commonly ob-served in TNBC. No significant correlation existed between PARP1 and PAR expression.
