Expression of CEA and E-cadherin and Its Correlation with Liver Metastasis of Colorectal Cancer

    Abstract: Objective: To detect the expression of CEA and E-cadherin in the serum of patients with colorectal carcinoma and to investigate its correlation with liver metastasis. Methods: The serum of 60 patients (26 cases with liver metastasis and 34 cases without liver metastasis) with colorectal cancer was collected postoperatively. CEA level was evaluated by radioimmunoassay and E-cadherin was evaluated by immunohistochemistry. Results: In the 26 patients with liver metastasis, 24(24/26, 92.3%) presented with a high level of CEA, but only 9 of the 34 patients without liver metastasis were found to have a high level of CEA. The difference between the two groups was significant(P=0.004). Expression of E-cadherin was correlated with differentiation but was not correlated with T stage or N stage. The rate of liver metastasis was higher in patients with negative expression of E-cadherin than in patients with positive expression of E-cadherin. Survival analysis showed a significant difference in the occurrence of liver metastasis between the two groups (P<0.05). Conclusion: The expression of CEA and E-cadherin in the serum of patients with colorectal cancer can predict liver metastasis after surgery.
