Abstract: Objectives: To investigate the incidence of soft tissue sarcomas and their relative frequencies in general population. And estimate the incidence trends of these diseases. Methods: The information of the incidence of soft tissue sarcomas from Jan 1993 to Dec 2003 is obtained from databank of Cancer Institute and Hospital of Tianjin Medical University (Tianjin Cancer Institute and Hospital) to be reviewed retrospectively. All 796 cases were assessed to find out the population incidence and their relative frequencies, and the estimation of yearly trend was also resulted. Results: The most frequent soft tissue sarcomas are MFH (malignant fibrous histiocytoma), synovial sarcoma, liposarcoma, and rabdomyosarcoma, et al, accounts for 31.5%, 16.8%, 16.8%, and 16.2% of all the 796 cases respectively. Soft tissue sarcomas can occur in a variety part of the body and in every period of age with special characteristics of each subtype. The yearly comparison indicates a trend of increasing incidence. Conclusions: Soft tissue sarcomas are fairly rare tumors in general population. MFH is the most common malignancy of mesenchymal tissue origin. Recently the incidence rates of soft tissue sarcomas were increasing slowly but steadily.
