Abstract: To observe the curative effects and adverse reactions of Boerning capsules added to the FOLFOX4 (Oxaliplatin, Calcium folinate and Fluorouracil) regimen in the treatment of colon cancer. Methods: The data of 94 colon cancer cases, admitted between January, 2005 and May,2006, were analyzed. Patients receiving the Boerning capsules with or without the FOLFOX4 regimen were randomly divided into two groups: in Group A, 45 patients received treatment with Boerning capsules plus the FOLFOX4 regimen, and in Group B 49 patients received the FOLFOX4 regimen only.Results: Boerning capsules markedly improved the quality of life for colon cancer patients, especially in terms of weight gain. In our study, there was no significant change in T- cell count/function, a parameter of the patients' immune function. However, Boerning capsules reduced adverse side effects caused by adjuvant chemotherapy. Conclusions: Boerning capsules will not affect the efficacy of colon cancer treatment. They can improve the quality of life for colon cancer patients by ameliorating the adverse symptoms caused by the chemotherapy.
