Abstract: Objective: To investigate the correlation between the expression of Bcl- 2, Survivin and CD44v6 and infection with HPV16/18 and the mechanism involved in carcinogenesis of the uterine cervix. Methods: Immunohistochemistry was used to detect levels of Bcl- 2, Survivin and CD44v6 expression in cervical cancer, cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and normal cervix, and PCR was used to assay infection with HPV16/18. Results: There were significant differences in the positive rate of expression of Bcl- 2, Survivin and CD44v6 between cervical cancer, CIN and normal cervix. These differences became more conspicuous with advancement of clinical stage and pathological grouping, and the positive rate was related to lymph node metastasis. HPV16/18 was detected at a minimal level in normal cervix, at a moderate level in CIN and at a significant level in cervical cancer, and there was a significant difference between the three. There was a correlation between Bcl- 2 and Survivin expression and the presence of HPV16/18 infection. Conclusions: The abnormal expression of Bcl- 2, Survivin and CD44v6 is associated with HPV16/18 infection and carcinogenesis. Bcl- 2, Survivin and CD44v6 expression levels might be used as indices for primary screening and prognosis of cervical cancer.
