Abstract:
Objective:To evaluate the short-term effect of elemene treatment on malignant brain tumors and to analyze patients’1-year survival rate using Meta-Analysis. Methods:We searched for related articles (1980-2009) in CNKI, CBM, VIP, Wanfang databases as well as the Medline database, and the standards of inclusion and exclusion were provided. The quality of the included study was evaluated by Jadad scale and the short-term effect was evaluated according to the re-sponse evaluation criteria in tumor provided by WHO: complete response (CR), partial response (PR), no change (NC), and progressive disease (PD). Efficacy was defined as CR/PR and inefficacy was defined as NC/PD. Revman 4.2 soft -ware was used for Meta-Analysis.Results: Five articles were adopted, and the total number of cases was351 . Short-term effect of Elemene was reported in five articles. There were 171 cases in the treatment group and 101 cases in the control group. Three articles reported 1-year survival rate. There were 101 cases in the treatment group and 105 cases in the con-trol group. Elemene alone or combined with radiotherapy improved 1-year survival rate. Conclusion:Elemene is demonstrat-ed effective in treating brain tumors, and it can be widely used. More series of controlled, perspective, randomized, dou-ble-blind, well-designed, and multi-center trials should be performed for further confirmation of the effect of Elemene on ma-lignant brain tumors.
