Abstract: Objective : To investigate the effect of surgical treatment on patients with anterior cranial base communi-cating tumor. Methods : We retrospectively analyzed the data from 60 patients with anterior cranial base com-municating tumors.All of the patients received surgical treatment.Pathological results showed 21 cases of be-nign tumors and 39 cases of malignant tumors.Forty-four patients underwent combined craniofacial ap-proach, five patients underwent evisceration of the eye, three patients received lateral rhinotomy, five patients underwent frontal epidural approach and three patients underwent orbital lateral approach. Results : Total tu-mor removal was achieved in 51 cases.Subtotal removal was achieved in four cases, and partial removal was achieved in five cases.The clinical symptoms were improved in 45 cases after surgery.The main compli-cations included cranial nerve injury in five cases, surgical wound infection in four cases (two cases were cured after intense local dressing replacement and two cases were cured after debridement), and temporal craniospinal fluid leakage in two cases.Twenty-three cases received postoperative radiotherapy (45Gy-65Gy).Fifteen patients received pre-or post-operative chemotherapy with DDP+5-Fu+pingyangmycin.The patients were followed up for 1-9 years.Eleven patients died during the follow-up period and two patients were lost to follow-up. Conclusion : The chief treatment for anterior cranial base communicating tumor is surgery and the most common procedure is the combined craniofacial approach.Local recurrence and distant metastasis are the primary causes of death.
