Abstract:
Objective :To evaluate the anorectal and bladder functions after sacral nerve resection in the patients with sacral bone tumors.
Methods :Bowel and bladder function in patients undergoing major sacral resection were analyzed rospectively. Fifty-eight cases were enrolled in the study.
Results :In all the cases with sacral nerves resection, 23 had preserved their bilateral S1 S3 nerve roots in the operation and the recovery rate of normal bowel and of bladder function in the patients within three months accounted for 86.96% and 78.26%,respectively; three cases had underwent unilateral sacrectomy, in which the contralateral sacral nerves were preserved, normal bowel and bladder funcdons were totally recovered within three months; five cases had sacrificed the bilateral S2 SS nerve roots and all had abnormal bowel and bladder function within three months.
Conclusions :Preservation of at least unilateral S1 S3 nerve roots is very important for the patients in keeping normal bowel and bladder function. Recovery of normal bowel and bladder function for the majority of patients is withinthree months.
