Abstract:
Objective :To review the clinical features and surgical treatment for patients with tem-poral lobe gangliogliomas.
Methods :Patients with temporal lobe gangliogliomas who underwent resec-tion of temporal lobe tumors, confirmed by surgical pathology, seen between September 1998 andNovember 2004 at the West China hospital, were selected. Medical records were reviewed for age at di-agnosis, age at onset of seizures, delay between seizure onset and tumor diagnosis, types and frequen-cies of seizures, EEG results, extent of surgery, and pathologic diagnosis. The follow- up period variedfrom 12 to 60 months (mean 30 months).
Results :Eighteen patients were identified, including 13 malesand 5 females. The patients' age at surgery ranged from 4 to 34 years (mean 17.6 years). All patientsunderwent at least one surgical procedure. Fifteen cases were classified as WHO Grade Ⅰ lesions, and3 as WHO Grade Ⅱ lesions. None of the patients experienced recurrence. Among all patients the con-trol rate of seizure amounted to 84%.
Conclusions :Complex partial seizures and auras are the commonpresenting symptom of these patients. Follow-up suggests patients will achieve relief from the seizuresafter surgery and have a low risk for tumor recurrence and malignant progression.
