Abstract: Objective: To study the therapeutic efficacy and safety of the Fentanyl transdermal patch on the aged patients with moderate or severe cancer pain and swallowing difficulty. Methods: Sixty-three patients at the age of over 65 years, with moderate or severe cancer pain, were treated with Fentanyl transdermal patch. Before enrollment, the patients had been treated with the non-opioid analgesics, tramadol or weak-opioid analgesics. Initial dose of the Fentanyl transdermal patch began at 2.5mg, with a two-week successive administration. The degree of pain remission, side effect and quality of life were compared. Results: After treatment, patients revealed moderate or excellent pain relief. Side effect was significantly less than other opioid analgesics and the quality of life for all patients was improved greatly. Conclusion: Treatment of the Fentanyl-transdermal therapeutic system (TTS) on the aged patients with moderate or severe cancer pain is effective and safe.
